I am Shantanu and I am sharing my experience of visiting Katraj Dairy’s processing plant. Here are some highlights.
It was a great exposure to have a look at the milk and other milk products’ plant. First, we were shown a documentary which gave information about how milk is collected, how its quality is checked, how it is processed and all steps till its packaging and dispatching in market. It was really amusing to listen, that the company which used to collect “only” 30,000 liters of milk a day now collects 2.5 lakhs liters of milk a day! Imagination of such quantity of milk was beyond capacity of my brain!
The documentary also showed the fridge which chills the milk by some -4 degree Celsius. It also showed the pasteurization plant. (We also saw it in visit of plant.)
In plant, there was a passage from which we were led to have a look. At first we saw a section of cleaning milk transportation crates. The crates enter a machine which cleans them and then crates get ready for further work. In another section, packing of ghee takes place. Beside it, there was section of ghee production.
We saw the printer of printing MRP, Batch number, and other things on labels. Looking it carefully, we pointed out that the printer was not touching the labels. As we asked about it, our guide said that this is laser printer and it prints without touching the labels. Just a person has to keep labels on a conveyer and the printer does its work automatically!
Then we saw flavored milk production and packing section. Beside it, there was ice cream section but there was no entry so we only had a glance over there and leaved.
We saw milk packaging. In plant, we were not able to get a chance to saw it very clearly, but in documentary, we saw it. The packing material is fed to the machine. The milk or any other product is made to flow in a specific proportion through that material and the machine seals it to specific length from both sides making them separate bags.
Then we were led to a gallery which was above plant of the homogenizing milk and beside pasteurization plant. Homogenizing milk means to mix all milk together and equalize fat content, water content, and other contents of milk to certain level. It is an important stage while processing because all milk is collected from various villages and there is even difference between milk of two cows. So to control quality and contents of it is important to homogenize milk.
After the homogenization is done, milk goes for pasteurization. This increases the life of milk. In the containers, milk is boiled to the certain temperature and immediately chilled to the certain temperature. This kills unwanted bacteria and increases the life of milk.
After that, we were led out of plant and then given ice cream! We saw how the label was printed, how ice cream is packed and eat it observing!
